2019.10.17

The Rakuten Translate project was awarded a special prize at this year’s Nikkei Deep Learning Business Awards on October 10 at Tokyo Big Sight. Co-sponsored by Nikkei Cross Trend and Nikkei x TECH and supported by Japan Deep Learning Association and METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry), awards are given to projects in recognition of their excellence in generating new businesses and social impact using Deep Learning.

The Rakuten Translate project is led by Head of RIT Singapore, Ewa Szymanska, Principal Researcher Liling Tan, and Principal Engineer Damien Gerard. Global Head of RIT, Masaya Mori and Ewa Szymanska attended the ceremony and received the special award on behalf of the entire team.

Rakuten Translate is an automatic translation system that translates content of Rakuten’s global services, such as video subtitles, e-commerce product descriptions, and travel booking information, into multiple languages using deep learning technology. More Rakuten users around the world can now watch TV dramas in their native languages instantaneously. Furthermore, this system is utilized to develop language learning aptitude, allowing users to learn Korean, Chinese and Japanese while enjoying their favorite foreign dramas. Rakuten aims to empower all forms of communication and to unlock new opportunities with Rakuten Translate.

During the ceremony, Yutaka Matsuo, University of Tokyo Professor and President of Japan Deep Learning, commented that automatic translation systems have now developed for practical application usage, and Rakuten Translate is building a significant business presence at the perfect time.
