Rakuten Institute of Technology in Cooperation Agreement Between Rakuten and Kobe City

2018.12.04

On December 1st, Rakuten announced a new collaboration agreement together with Kobe City. The aim of the agreement is to improve the services for citizens and visitors of the city, and help to further develop the region. The agreement specifies six areas of cooperation.

  1. Improving and promoting the attraction of Kobe
  2. Promoting inbound tourism
  3. Promoting the “furusato nozei” hometown tax program
  4. Providing support for human resource development in collaboration with universities and other organizations
  5. Contributing to the region through sports
  6. Further development of Kobe City, and other items

One of the larger parts that Rakuten Institute of Technology is involved in is a internship program between Kobe City and our Future Merchant Design Lab that was officially announced at the same time. By including internships from the city, and strong collaboration with academia and business in the region, we hope to find new and exciting ways to tackle local issues in the city.

We will of course also play an as important part as possible in the many technology initiatives related to the agreement, by looking at how Rakuten’s and Rakuten Institute of Technology’s various services and solutions might help bolster the economy and vitality of Kobe City. One of the things we pride ourselves in is our ability to collaborate in industry-academia partnerships, and this will open up a wide range of new options and challenges for us to attack.

We look forward to bringing you many more posts in the future about what this partnership has led to in more detail. For more details on the cooperation agreement, see the official press releases in English and Japanese below.
