On December 8^th at the Mitaka Industrial Plaza in Mitaka City in western Tokyo, the final judging presentations of the 2018 International Ruby Programming Contest for Junior and Senior High School Students was held. The judging panel was headed up by Yukihiro “Matz” Matsumoto, the creator of Ruby, and among the other 7 judges were Masaya Mori, Global Head of Rakuten Institute of Technology. Winners and runner ups were decided in two sections, Games and Creative, as well as several jury selection awards, including a special award presented by Matz himself.

7 submissions from the Games section and 3 submissions from the Creative section made it through to the final round of judging, from an original 90 submissions. After presentations from the 10 finalists, the final judging was made. The winners left the competition with diplomas, prizes such as laptops and tablet computers, and of course bragging rights.

The contest was organized by an executive committee consisting of 10 organizations working to spread the use of Ruby, and this was the 8^th contest held. It is a real treat to see what all the young contestants come up with, and we are already looking forward to the 9^th contest to be held in 2019.
