Rakuten Technology Conference 2017 (RTC2017) was held on 28th of October at Crimson House which is a Rakuten HQ in Futako tamagwa. This year’s conference was the 11th anniversary and the theme for this was “Head, Hands and Heart”.

We invited many guests who are pioneers from a great range of fields, such as Professor Regina Barzilay of MIT (a top researcher in NLP and AI), Yoichiro Miyake of Square Enix (AI game developer, lead AI architect for Final Fantasy XV), Kazuo Yano of Hitachi (leader in development of AI platforms), Linda Liukas author of “Hello Ruby” (a book for children to learn the concepts of programming) and D-Wave (the world first commercial quantum computer).

Not only guest speakers, but also the members of Rakuten Institute of Technology Boston, Singapore, Paris and Tokyo presented some interesting topics.

Lasguido Nio, a researcher at Rakuten Institute of Technology Tokyo was talked about Realizing AI converstaional Bot. He talked about the conversational bot, how we define it, chatbot anatomy, and what researchers do to make the smart chatbot intelligence.

Aaron Levine, a research scientist at Rakuten Institute of Technology Boston talked about the power of parallelism, discussed the advances in machine learning and the types of data processing pipelines that allow for the massive parallel processing of datasets to automatically clean and categorize even the largest of datasets.

Keiji Shinzato, a lead scientist at Rakuten Institute of Technology Boston presented about methodologies to automatically organize unstructured data using natural language processing techniques so that we can help Rakuten’s business.

Giuseppe “Pino” Di Fabbrizio,a Principal Research Scientist and Group Leader at Rakuten Institute of Technology Boston presented about illustrated machine learning methods that have been successfully applied at web-scale to optimize search relevance for e-commerce.

Béranger Dumont, a research scientist at Rakuten Institute at Technology Paris reviewed some of the successful deep learning algorithms in light of their current and expected impact on e-commerce.

The conference visitors enjoyed other various activities as well, for example hands-on workshops which allowed even children to experience and free lunch at Crimson House cafeteria.
